  1. The Glow-Up Your Bathroom Deserves

By Tammy Lane, Interior Design Partner at Flair

07/09/2026

When was the last time you looked at your bathroom and thought, wow? For many homeowners, the bathroom is purely practical, a place to rush through morning routines & wind down at night. But with the right lighting, this hardworking room can transform into a serene, spa-like retreat that you will want to spend time in. If your bathroom feels flat or uninspired, lighting could be the missing piece of the puzzle. Lighting shapes how we experience a space. It affects mood, functionality, and even how large or small a room feels. A single harsh overhead fixture can cast unflattering shadows and make beautiful tile or stone look dull. On the other hand, thoughtfully layered lighting can bring depth, warmth, and dimension to every surface. Flair Showers have such a beautiful choice of colour finishes, we need to thoughtfully choose our lighting to enhance their beauty also!

The Three Essential Lighting Layers

Ambient: Start with ambient lighting, the foundation of your bathroom glow up. This is your overall illumination, often from a ceiling-mounted fixture or recessed lights. Instead of relying on one central bulb, consider spreading light evenly across the ceiling. The most important thing is that you control this lighting level – try to have it on a dimmer if possible. Also, if you must install spots, make sure that they are directional so that you can control where the light lands – this reduces shadows and makes small bathrooms feel brighter and more spacious. Task: Next comes task lighting, especially around the mirror. Proper lighting here is essential for daily grooming tasks. Install sconces on either side of the mirror at eye level to eliminate shadows on your face. If side placement isn’t possible, choose a fixture above the mirror (but not above your head!) that casts light downward evenly. There are also LED mirrors on the market which create the exact light needed for putting on make up and making you look good while you’re doing it! Your morning routine will instantly feel more polished and so will your reflection. Accent: Accent lighting is where the magic happens. It’s like the cherry on the cake. Use it to highlight architectural features, textured tile, open shelving, or a statement bathtub. A subtle LED strip under a floating vanity or along a shower niche adds a soft glow that elevates the entire room. These details create visual interest and make your bathroom feel intentionally designed. A sensor-activated LED installed beneath a vanity automatically illuminates at night, enhancing the bathroom's ambiance and elevating its overall atmosphere.

Lighting & Flair Finish Guide

Here’s how to light each of Flair’s colour finishes so they look their best. Brushed Brass Rich and timeless. Best with 2700K–3000K, warm diffused bulbs, and soft shades. Pair with warm whites, timber, and natural stone for a cohesive glow. Brushed Bronze Deep and architectural. Use 3000K for balance or 2700K for spa warmth. Layered lighting enhances its dimension. Works beautifully with warm stone and textured tiles. Silver (Chrome / Polished) Clean and reflective. 3000K delivers clarity; 3500K suits ultra-modern spaces. Avoid overly warm lighting to maintain a crisp aesthetic. Minimise harsh spotlighting to reduce glare. Matte Black Bold and modern. Best at 3000K with strong ambient and accent lighting to create contrast and subtle edge highlights. Complements white tiles, concrete tones, and timber. Gunmetal Contemporary with cool undertones. 3000K keeps it balanced; 3500K works in cooler, minimalist spaces. Pair with grey stone and charcoal palettes and consider niche lighting to add depth. Quick Bathroom Lighting Checklist Use ambient, task, and accent lighting for balanced illumination Standard colour temperature: 3000K; choose 2700K for a warmer, spa-like atmosphere Place lights evenly at mirrors to minimise shadows and improve visibility Select bulbs with CRI 90+ for accurate colour rendering Layer lighting to highlight textures and finishes, enhancing the overall design Avoid harsh spotlighting to prevent glare and maintain a comfortable environment

Final Thoughts from Tammy

Lighting shapes both the mood and appearance of your bathroom, influencing how colours, textures, and finishes are perceived. Warm tones create a relaxing, spa-like feel, while cooler hues offer clarity and energy for daily routines. Choosing the right temperature ensures every surface looks intentional and refined. Layered lighting – ambient, task, and accent adds depth and balance, preventing harsh shadows and flat surfaces. When thoughtfully combined, these layers highlight architectural details and allow Flair finishes to reveal their richness and modern elegant designs. Great design does more than shine – it glows, creating a bathroom that feels both functional and beautifully considered. Safety First: ALWAYS use a qualified professional electrician when changing out any of your lighting and electrics around your home. Bathrooms require specific waterproof lighting in the wet zones – typically, IP44 is adequate for areas with minimal water exposure. IP65 may be necessary for areas with heavy splashing or direct water jets.

The finishing touch

Mixing metal finishes doesn’t have to feel complicated. By understanding how different finishes work together and following a few simple design principles, you can create a bathroom that feels balanced, timeless and uniquely yours. Whether you’re drawn to warm metallic tones, contemporary contrasts or something in between, pairing Flair Showers with the St James Collection makes it easy to create a beautifully considered bathroom where every detail works in harmony.
